Hartwick Students Travel to Rwanda

MoveUp Global and Hartwick College have enjoyed a productive partnership over the past 4 years.  Hartwick students have helped Move Up improve its website and build its social media presence while faculty have completed research on Move Up’s programs and their impact.

During the 2024 J-Term at Hartwick, Professor Elizabeth Bloom and 11 students traveled to Rwanda to work as teaching assistants in the Nyabiehe and Rwinzovu schools. The trip fulfilled a requirement for education students to complete a month of education experience and gave Hartwick students experience in partnering with teachers from another culture and education system while applying student-centered pedagogy to a Rwandan context.

Prior to their departure, Hartwick students raised more than $3k to fulfill a wish list produced by teachers to meet their classroom needs Those funds paid for:

  • Toys for the pre-k

  • Maps, charts, & graphs for the classrooms

  • 120 new school uniforms

The teachers were very welcoming and anxious to learn from the American students and obtain practice in speaking American english. Every initiative was done in collaboration with the local Rwandan partner IREME, the school leadership team, and the teachers, making it a mutually beneficial academic & cultural exchange.
