From Tree Branches to Safe Swings: The Power of Our New Playground in Rural Rwanda

In a heartwarming and transformative development, children in the region surrounding the Volcanoes National Park, where Move Up Global operates, have experienced the sheer joy of playing on swings and a playground for the very first time. While this may seem ordinary to many, the significance of this playground cannot be overstated.

For years, children in this area had no access to safe and well-maintained playgrounds. They resorted to swinging on tree branches, often resulting in injuries and a sense of hopelessness. However, thanks to the unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts of Musanze District, Gataraga Sector, and Move Up Global supporters, a reliable playground has been constructed, complete with swings, slides, and plans for a full soccer field.

Olive Nyiraneza, the Executive Director of Ireme Education for Social Impact, the implementation partner for Move Up Global, passionately emphasized the broader implications of this initiative.

"This is not only an opportunity for the children to play; it’s also a teaser for them to come to school. The school environment should attract more children to come to school. We foresee less absenteeism and increased passion for school," she said.

Playgrounds are not just spaces for fun; they are vital for the educational development of children. They provide a space for physical activity essential for healthy growth and development. Studies have shown that children who engage in regular physical activity tend to perform better academically. Physical exertion helps improve concentration, memory, and classroom behavior, leading to better academic outcomes.

The introduction of a playground can significantly enhance academic success. When children have a safe and engaging place to play, they are more likely to attend school regularly. This increased attendance translates to more consistent learning and better academic performance. Additionally, the skills learned on the playground, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication, are directly transferable to the classroom.

Why did we invest in building a new playground?

The psychosocial and emotional benefits of playgrounds are equally important. Playgrounds provide a space for children to interact with their peers, build friendships, and develop social skills. These interactions are crucial for emotional development, helping children learn to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, and build empathy. The sense of community and belonging fostered on the playground can also boost self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation.

Investing in playgrounds offers significant cost benefits for schools and communities. Improved academic performance and reduced absenteeism can lead to better educational outcomes, which in turn can enhance future employment opportunities and economic stability for the community. Additionally, the health benefits of regular physical activity can reduce healthcare costs associated with childhood obesity and related illnesses.

The playground initiative by Move Up Global is a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive change. But this is just the beginning. We hope to work to expand our mission across the region, bringing more children the joy and benefits of safe, well-maintained playgrounds. Together, we can create a brighter future, one playground at a time.

Join us in making a difference. Support Move Up Global and help bring the joy of play to every child in the region. Together, we can build a future where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
