How to bring better health and educational opportunities to resource-constrained communities in rural Rwanda?

We started with bringing electricity and internet access to our partner primary school in Musanze District. With laptop computers and smartphones, the teachers participate in Zoom classes for computer literacy and English conversation. We moved on to health screening and best practices for teaching math, languages, and science.

Move Up Global board members decided to collect children’s books for beginning readers as well as chapter books and well-loved classics to be read aloud. Next, we asked our local librarians in Boston to help us catalogue the books by title, author, and reading level. With generous donations from an online fundraising effort, we shipped over 220 books to Rwanda.

Now, our partner NGO, IREME, will collect the books in Kigali and bring them to Nyabirehe School, where our Director Olive, will create a new lending library. Teachers will have books to read aloud to their students, and students will be able to borrow books to bring home and practice reading in English. There is nothing like having a book to develop a love of learning!
